WEAVING Jazz, Blues, R&B and Roots, Anna awakens a part of your soul you’d almost forgotten
BIO / ANNA FISZMAN
Anna Fiszman’s earliest influence was her father’s love of Classical music and Jazz and later expanded to such artists as Joni Mitchell and Janis Joplin before ultimately embracing Jazz with icons such as Bessie Smith, Ella Fitzgerald, Carmen McCrae and Billie Holiday.
Anna first made her mark in Australia, as one of the founding members of the popular all woman satirical group, The Hot Bagels, an ensemble that headlined at Australia’s leading comedy venues and festivals, opening for legends such as Phyllis Diller. The group also made numerous television appearances on shows like “Hey, Hey, It’s Saturday”,"The Daryl Somers Show”,“Good Morning Australia”, and a number of others, cementing their place in Australia’s comedy and music scene.
In addition, Anna also led her own Jazz quartet with Melbourne’s most prominent Jazz and session musicians before moving to New York in 1989, where she performed in iconic venues including The Village Gate, Birdland, and the Brooklyn Academy of Music. It was there, she met guitarist and bassist Marc Landesberg, and together they developed a distinctive interplay of voice and guitar. Marc blended rhythmic, melodic, and percussive elements to provide a contrapuntal harmonic foundation for Anna’s soaring vocals, producing a sound more earthy and immediate than most traditional trio settings.
